Retired football legend, George Weah has emerged winner of the Liberia Presidential polls which was concluded on the 26th of December.
The footballer turned politician will be sworn in as the 25th President of Liberia, after defeating 73 year old incumbent Vice President, Joseph Boakai.
After the announcement of the result, Weah who is set replace Africa’s first female head of state, renowned economist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, couldn’t contain his joy, made a post on his Twitter handle, thanking his family, friends and everyone that supported him throughout the process.
“I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends, and my loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season.”
During his football career, the legend made history as the first African footballer to win the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or, and played for Arsenal as well as AC Milan International.
