A woman with rare medical condition which causes her face to melt has rejected surgery for fear of dying during the operation.
The 63 year old grandmother, identified as Wiang Boonmee from Thailand, started developing abnormal uneven growths which gradually increased in other parts of her face, closing her eyes blind and leaving her nose and mouth twisted.
According to reports, the condition was discovered when she was a child, which progressed as she got older.
The growth after many years, has left her face out of shape which makes it look like her skin has melted.
The mother of one tries to live a normal life, earning a living even with her condition, she works by selling accessories on pavements of Bangkok, the city she recently moved to, from her rural hometown in Surin province.
Medics were contacted to seek assistance for Wiang after her condition received attention last week. But despite the serious her condition is, she rejected the help due to her fear of losing her life while being operated upon.
The condition of the grandmother of two, is believed to be neurofibromatosis.
She said: “I have had this problem for a long timSh. More than I can remember. I have survived and I’m healthy and have a job. If I have an operation I might never wake up. I’m afraid I would not survive it. My daughter brings me here so I can sell flowers and camphor oils. I am happy and somebody gave me a donation this week, which I’m grateful for.”
While visiting Wiang on the streets of Bangkok to offer help for a medical attention, Dr Sunura Ourairat, President of Rangsit University, said:
‘I have asked for assistance from the Ministry of Public Health and asked for doctors to visit this grandmother. She is blind and originally from the north east region. We are welcome and ready to help with surgery but she is afraid of dying. She said thank you to everybody for trying to help. We will continue to see what can be done for her.”
